Your Questions About Aromatherapy And Migraines

Nancy asks…

Are there any good teas, or aromatherapy type things which work well in relieving headaches/migraines?

I’m also interested in sources as well. I would like to read about it and/or hear about your personal experiences?

Thank you!

Joy answers:

Some very simple Essential Oils to try are Lavender or Peppermint. You can find 100% pure Essential Oil at your local Natural Food store or metaphysical store. I like NOW Brand or Lotus Brand. I also prefer the smell of Bulgarian Lavender. It smells and feels more earthy.

Place just a couple drops on your finger and rub into your temples. You may need to dilute the peppermint by using a massage oil, extra virgin olive oil, or grapeseed oil. Do not use regular cooking oil.

A great book for information is “Essential Oils Integrative Medical Guide: Building Immunity, Increasing Longevity, and Enhancing Mental Perfomance with Therapeutic-Grade Essential Oils” by D. Gary Young, ND. It may be a long title but the information in this book is wonderful! I always refer back to this book for my essential oil needs.

Herbs for Headache

I am often asked about using herbs for migraine prevention, and funnily enough it was through the use of Feverfew for migraine that I first became aware of complementary therapy at all.

I am not a herbalist. My training was as a nutritionist, so – while I am aware that herbal medicine can be very effective – I urge you to consult with a qualified herbalist rather than trying to self-prescribe, because of the possibilities of interactions with other remedies.

However, to increase your awareness about some of the herbs that are known to help with migraine, check out this site on herbs for headaches.

Your Questions About Rescue Remedy For Migraine Headaches

Thomas asks…

Rescue Remedy for headaches?

I get bad migraines almost daily. Recently I purchased some Rescue Remedy for my occasional anxiety attacks. (I know, I sound like a total mess!) I was wondering if anyone has had any experience using Rescue Remedy for headaches, or if you know of any other natural remedies that may be helpful. I practice Reiki, so use that, but am interested in something that would be helpful while I’m at work. Thanks in advance!

Joy answers:

I’ve used Rescue Remedy for tension headaches with good results. Click this link to find more information on tension headaches.

And this one for Panic Attacks.

Hope that helps.

Your Questions About Migraine Headaches And Cheese

Susan asks…

Does this sound like a food allergy?

The last time I had a milkshake I had a bad pain in the middle of my chest, right in between of my ribcage, as well as a migraine headache that lasted 2 days. I ate cheese the other day, and the same thing happened. Ibuprofen did not help my bad headache and the pharmacist said to take Gas-Ex to help with the chest pain, but that did not help one bit either. I took Pepcid as well, but no relief
I eat cereal with milk in it, but I don’t have any problems, though I don’t drink the milk.
I don’t know what is the matter, maybe one of you has experienced this?

Joy answers:

If you had a milk allergy and/or lactose intolerance your symptoms would be nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, gas, bloating etc.

I suspect something else is at work here. Did you check your blood pressure at all…..especially after the cheese?

Have you had problems with smoked meats or sausages?

Are you on any prescription medications?

Check it out with your doctor.

Your Questions About How To Stop A Migraine In Progress

Sandy asks…

Getting rid of a migraine?

I had a really bad migraine last thurday and friday, it was so bad that I couldn’t even study for classes. I was stuck in bed, and when I had to move to go to classes or whatever the pain was horrible. All the otc medications I took didn’t help at all and it just seemed to get worse throughout the day. When I tried to sleep I couldn’t, and I actually started vomitting a lot when the pain was at its worse.
Now I am feeling it come back again. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of it, or stop it from progressing?

Joy answers:

Grabbing a pill is not the best way to spike a migraine. Here are some ways to get over a migraine though all won’t work for everyone.

The most important thing is recognize a migraine when it is starting. If you are beginning to feel stressed out in the eye area and feeling a sense of nausea, a migraine may just be beginning. Immediately stop work particularly if you are sitting at a computer. Best is to go to a quiet room, pull the shades and lie down for a while. Try and sleep. Most headaches can be got rid of before they start becoming worse if workaholics pause before things get worse.

Take off spectacles or contact lenses and massage your eye area softly. If you have any sensation of a cold, take steam. This will clear any sinus blockages and give you relief. Do not watch television or hear loud music at this time. Better not to get into a conversation on the cellphone either.

Spiking a migraine with a hot oil massage is another method. Take some olive oil or coconut oil and heat it to a comfortable level. Get a friend or family member to give you a good head massage with swift strokes. The strokes should first cover the top of the head then from side to side on the forehead. The oil can then be massaged around the back of the head. The temples should be pressed and nape of the neck should be massaged gently. Wash your face properly after this massage and you are sure to feel better.

Try acupressure points for spiking a migraine. Pinch the tips of your thumbs yourself or ask a friend and family member to do so. The first digit of the thumbs should be pinched and held for a few seconds then released. This pinching and releasing should be practiced for several minutes or as required. Ensure that the pressure that is applied should not be too painful but comforting.

Another method to get rid of a headache is to fill a bucket of warm lukewarm water and sit with your legs in the bucket. The water should reach half-way up your legs or maybe just below the knees. If you can have a head massage while sitting with your legs in the bucket of water, you may feel considerable relief quickly.

Your Questions About Reiki And Migraines

Lizzie asks…

how do i practice reiki again?

i was forced to take psychatric pills for 4 years and i also recieved electric shocks & now i cannot feel good/normal anymore. i have developed migraine and other body irritations due to the reaction of medication..which i think is permanent.
Any way i can feel spiritualy inclined again?

Joy answers:

I’m not quite sure if you are saying you used to be a Reiki practitioner before or not. Once you are attuned you have the ability forever. Or you can seek out someone locally or by distance to have regular sessions with until you start to feel some normalcy in your life again.

You can also try some meditation.

Your Questions About Migraine And The Weather

Lizzie asks…

What could be causing my Migraine headaches? weather?

What could be causing my migriane headaches? I always seem to get them on the left side of my head around my temple and my eye. I have had MRI’s and cat scans and they did not find anything. It seems like the doctors can not figure out what could be causing these awful things. I know sometimes I get them because I am tired but what else could be causing them? Also what is a good way to get rid of them?

Joy answers:

Yes, weather can definitely be a trigger. Check out this post about Migraine and Weather.

Your Questions About Aromatherapy And Migraines

Lisa asks…

What does Aromatherapy (for headaches) look like and how does it work?

Is it an oil?
Is it for your bath?
Just a candle with the scent?
The wood stick things that you dip?
I’m confused!!

Joy answers:

Aromatherapy oils can be burned. There’s a pic of an aromatherapy burner on this page

http://handicrafts-india-info.blogspot.com/2011/06/aroma-therapy-burners.html

You fill the top bit with water and add a few drops of oil then light the tea light. As the oil warms, it fills the air with a lovely fragrance that can help you relax (or lift your spirits, depending on the fragrance). That’s how it works – if it works. It won’t work like a pharmaceutical analgesic.

For sinus headaches, it’s worth trying a few drops eucalyptus oil in a bowl of just boiled water and inhaling the steam. Or you could just try it without the eucalyptus but I reckon the eucalyptus helps, if only as a placebo.

Whatever else you do, do not rub aromatherapy oils onto your skin. A few of them (including lavender) won’t irritate or ‘burn’ but many will.

Good luck.

Tension Headaches

Question: I am often asked by clients if they are suffering from a migraine, or “just” a tension headache.

Answer: This site about tension headaches can provide further insight, together with suggestions for soothing them. You’ll also find a great deal of information on migraines and help that’s common to both conditions. So while your doctor will want to make a correct diagnosis, for sufferers, the distinction can be purely academic. Much of the advice given to relieve tension headaches will be beneficial to migraine sufferers too.

Your Questions About Migraine And Caffeine

Chris asks…

Migraine medication without caffeine?

I don’t get migraines very often, but every once in awhile I get a really bad one. Excedrin works great during the day, but the caffeine in it keeps me up if I take it before bedtime. Are there any over-the-counter migraine medications that work well and don’t have any caffeine?

Joy answers:

Syndol contains caffeine but makes you drowsy. However, it can lead to addiction so shouldn’t be used too often.
